Less than an hour from Calais (or 15mins from Paris Charles de Gaulle airport) you’re in beautiful historic Picardie where the real France begins. Close enough for weekend breaks – and shopping breaks too of course. With dozens of charming towns and villages, a myriad tourist sites and wide variety of landscapes, Picardy is just as enticing for your holidays.
A land of culture, the cradle of Gothic art and an unspoiled environment: Picardy is a treasure-trove of art and natural beauty. Its cathedrals at Beauvais, Amiens, Senlis, Laon or Noyon illustrate the rise of Gothic art as it spread across France and Europe. The charm of its small Medieval town of Senlis or the riches of the châteaux at Pierrefonds, Coucy, Chantilly, Bagatelle and Compiègne, surrounded by magnificent gardens, parks and forests set a nostalgic mood that's enhanced during festivals, son et lumières shows and Picardy games.
Picardie’s coastline is the least urbanised in all France with miles upon miles of beautiful sandy beaches and dunes. Great for windsurfing, land yachting, sailing, swimming and building castles. But there are lots of real castles too, often tucked away in the vast expanses of oak and beech forests (largest in all Europe).
Amiens capital of Picardie, barely 90mins drive from Calais, ideal for a short break in Northern France. A bustling University town, home of Jules Verne, with a glorious Gothic Cathedral (UNESCO World Heritage Site). Just one of many historic towns with world-class cathedrals or châteaux.
Although Picardie is somewhat a stagnating region, with the industrial area of Saint-Quentin in the north of Picardie hard hit by economic crisis, the south of the region, at the border with Île-de-France, is booming due to the increasing inflow of Parisians relocating to the distant and greener suburbs of the Oise department.
Between the 1990 and 1999 French censuses, the population of Oise increased at the brisk pace of 0.61% per year (almost twice faster than France as a whole), while the Aisne département lost inhabitants, and the Somme barely grew, at a laggard 0.16% per year. Today, 41.3% of the population of Picardie live inside the Oise département, which historically was not part of Picardy.
Geographically, the artificial character of the région is also apparent. Although Picardy proper is a vast flat plain of open fields, famed for the gruesome Battle of the Somme, the south of Picardie (historically part of Île-de-France) is a very scenic hilly area with large forests.
