The Nord-Pas-de-Calais region hugs the northern coast of France with its 90km of beaches, sand dunes and cliffs stretched between Calais and Berck-sur-Mer. The provincial capital of Nord-Pas-de-Calais is Lille with its impressive Grand Place in the medieval old town and which won the coved City of Culture in 2004. The land is predominantly flat and well-drained, with northern sections below sea level. The coasts are dotted with high chalk cliffs.
Nord-Pas-De-Calais shares its border with Belgium and so there is a strong Flemish influence. Many people still speak Flemish and the locals drink more beer than wine, especially noticeable during carnivals or annual fairs. Accessibility to northern European countries is good thanks to excellent rail and road links. There is great accessibility to the UK, via a number of passenger ports and Eurostar at Lille.
The coastal towns are the region's highlights. Calais, 'the most English town in France', lies just 40km across the coast from England whilst other seaside spots to explore include nostalgic Le Touquet, a throwback to the 1920s, the fishing village of Etaples and windswept Wimereux. The historic beaches of Dunkerque and Boulogne-sur-Mer, with its appetizing fish restaurants and attractive medieval quarter, also deserve a trip.
This coast is at the narrowest stretch of La Manche (the English Channel), the closest to the white cliffs of Dover. Sandy beaches can be found at Sangatte and Wissant and, dig deeper into the countryside, and you'll find lovely woodland, river valleys, market gardens, fine golf courses and pretty villages. Away from the coast, Arras is one of the most beautiful towns in northern France, with a towering cathedral, arcaded central squares and the ornate Hotel de Ville. The region’s accessibility means that there are many British second home owners. Prices of property in the more attractive areas are driven up because of this, although bargains can be still found. It is more expensive close to coastal areas although not extortionately compared with the coasts of other regions.
