When you purchase a property in France you will require a French bank account. This could be for your mortgage payments and insurance direct debits if you purchase a leaseback property, or for your utilities such as EDF (electricity) or telephone if you purchase a buy to let or residential property.
The French banking system is very different to the UK system and banks commonly charge for the service of having a bank account. A typical charge would be in the region of 8 Euros a month which covers online internet banking, debit visa card and cheque book.
Whilst the service in France needs to be paid for, many people find it superior to the services offered by UK banks and do not mind paying the cost especially as you often have a named point of contact with their direct telephone number and email!
